Even as consumers fling themselves into last minute shopping in preparation for the holidays (for the holiday season-to-date, nearly $32 billion has been spent online, marking a 15% increase versus the corresponding days last year, comScore has just reported), there is next year's exciting events to whcih to look forward. Namely the Super Bowl.
This year, it will be streamed live for the first time, the NFL has announced. Specifically, the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl and NBC's wild-card playoff games will be streamed both online and on mobile phones for the first time. NBCSports.com and the NFL have streamed games online since 2008 with SNF Extra, NBC Sports' exclusive video, but this is the first time playoff games have been streamed, according to NBC Sports.
More Subdued Growth Live streaming the Super Bowl may give this channel a needed boost. Even though the amount of time spent streaming videos online has more than doubled since 2008, its 9% year-over-year growth from 2010 to 2011 is more subdued than the previous 2 years, according to Nielsen.
Data from the analysis indicates that time spent watching videos online is growing at a much faster rate than the number of video viewers, which has risen slightly more than 25% since 2008, including 4% in the past year. Total streams, meanwhile, have also grown at a faster rate than the number of viewers, though at a lesser rate than the total amount of time spent.
